Hens in barn systems live within the breeding unit.
They do not live in cages, but they live permanently indoors without ever going out and never seeing the sunlight.
There are also conditions of overcrowding (9 hens per m²), which cause hens discomfort and to become aggressive.
They have relative freedom of movement, the ability to open their wings, to move, to step on and to scratch soil, to nest, to perch, which is definitely an improvement over cages.
Preventive antibiotics are used.
